Title:  Energy Research & High Impact Publishing in Joule
Date:Friday, June 15, 2018
Time:14:15-15:00 p.m.
Venue:Room 303, Building C
Speaker:  Philip Earis 、Dr. Rose Zhu (朱昌荣)

Abstract

In this talk we will offer a unique insight into the publishing process of a high-impact energy journal, from the perspective of a recent energy researcher-turned-editor. We will first introduce Joule, the new high-impact energy journal from Cell Press, and our Editorial team. Next, we will motivate and demonstrate Joule’s strong interest in serving the energy research community in China. We will then shed light on the life of a scientific editor, the manuscript life cycle, and the peer review process. Finally, we will give additional detail describing editor considerations when evaluating manuscripts and provide advice and provide typical well-written examples to authors from an editor’s point of view.

Bio-Philip Earis

Philip Earis is Editor-in-Chief of Joule, a world-class scale-spanning energy research journal published by Cell Press. With a research background in physics from Cambridge University, Philip joined the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2004 where he ran a portfolio of 7 leading physical science journals.  This included the journal Energy & Environmental Science, which he launched in 2008 and developed to be one of the world’s highest-impact research publications (Impact Factor = 29.5). Philip has extensive collaborations with China, and in 2009 Philip worked with Prof. Chunli Bai (President, CAS) to launch Nanoscale, a high-profile nano journal. In 2013 Philip left academic publishing, moving to India for three years to run Project Light, an organisation developing and installing solar power in off-grid Indian communities. Philip returned to the UK in 2016 for a new position with Cell Press (publishers of the famous life-science journal Cell), to launch Joule. He frequently visits China and has close connections with many leading scientists around the world.

Bio-Rose Zhu

Dr. Rose Zhu (朱昌荣) is the Associate Editor for Joule based out of Shanghai office. She started her Ph.D. study at Nanyang Technological University (NTU, Singapore) under Prof. Hong Jin FAN in 2012 after received BSc degree in Sichuan University (China). She joined Prof. Shirley MENG’s group as a visiting scholar in 2015 at University of California, San Diego. Dr. Zhu worked as Research Fellow successively in NTU under Prof. FAN and National University of Singapore under Prof. John WANG from 2016 to 2017.  She has published more than 10 first/co-first-author papers in in the field of Catalysis, Li, Na, Zn ion Batteries, Supercapacitors, to Advanced Materials, Nano Letters, Chemical Society Review, Nature Communications, Material Horizon, Nano Energy etc.
